Canada Driving Licences
Canada driving licences are not issued by a federal authority, but by provincial and territorial governments, who are in charge of establishing their own requirements as well as the steps motorists need to follow in order to obtain, renew, replace or correct information on their driver’s licences. Learn more about which driving licence services are offered in Canada below:
How to Apply for a Canada Driving Licence
In order to obtain a new Canada drivers licence, you must pass a driving course at an official driving school, pass a knowledge and road test, as well as obtain a learner’s licence first, followed by a novice licence. You must present a few documents for identification purposes when applying for your learner’s licence at a driver licence office.
Renew Your Canada Driving Licence
Renewing your licence in Canada is a fairly simple process, and must be completed every five years. It is illegal to drive with an expired driver licence, therefore it’s important to renew your licence before the expiration date. You will be required to pay any appropriate fees, however, seniors who are 65 and older pay a smaller fee.
If your license has been expired for three or more years, you will be required to pass both road tests and a vision screening as well.
Replace Your Canada Driving Licence
If you have lost your Canada drivers license, or it was stolen, it is important to report it right away and begin the process of obtaining a new one. This is especially important if your license was stolen, as this makes it easier for thieves to steal your identity in multiple ways. In order to obtain a new Canada drivers licence, you should first reach out to your local licensing office.
Address Change in Canada
Moving is a common part of life, and packing your things is not the only task you’ll need to complete. Among the many other issues that come along with moving, changing your address on your driving license is one of the most important ones. In Canada, you must change the address on your licence in Canada within 10 days of moving.
You can do so in one of three ways:
- In person
- By phone
Changing Your Name on Your Canada Driver Licence
Change your name on your license by visiting a Canadian driver licensing office and submitting legal proof of your name change. You will also need to bring payment for any necessary fees.
Enhanced Driver’s Licence
With an Enhanced Driver’s Licence, you can easily cross the U.S. border and use it as both a license and travel document. There are a few requirements that must be met beforehand in order to get an enhanced driver’s license.
Please be aware that your enhanced driver’s licence cannot be used to enter the U.S. if traveling by plane. It is for travel by land or water ONLY.
International Driving Permit
Unlike the above mentioned licensing procedures, the international driving permit is a federal document issued by the Canadian Automobile Association exclusively. This document is issued for Canadian motorists who wish to drive a vehicle in foreign countries, as long as it is accompanied by a valid Canada drivers licence. This document is valid for a year, after which it needs to be re-issued.
